'Wang Chien-ming doll' spurs donations to PTS

The PTS cable TV system has broadcast 35 U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB) games and Taiwan-born star pitcher Wang Chien-ming who helped the New York Yankees to win the American League East title helped create an unprecedented baseball craze in Taiwan.

Wang chalked up 19 wins during the regular season, a major league record for a player from Asia.

Any products related to Wang, including "Wang Chien-ming EasyCards" for Taipei commuters and dolls bearing the names of Wang, have become the hottest selling items on the Taiwan market.

Many people believe that the value of the products will continue climbing in the years ahead, considering Wang's rising career.

Even the beleaguered President Chen Shui-bian attempted to cash on Wang's popularity to cope with the most serious crisis in his political career, though most baseball fans don't want to see sports contaminated by politicians.

In order to raise funds, the non-profit PTS launched a campaign to accept a donation of NT$1,888 from each baseball fan starting at 10:00 a.m. sharp yesterday.

The first 1,000 fans who wired money into the designated account would be given an authorized five-inch "Wang Chien-ming doll" as a souvenir.

PTS had to shut down the whole operation at 10:04:25 a.m. because the system was flooded with donations from more than 4,000 people, who wired over NT$9 million into the account.

These figures did not include the 50 people who jumped the gun to send in money before 10:00 a.m. These donors were disqualified from getting the souvenir.

An executive at PTS said the first 1,000 qualified fans will get the Wang doll as promised.

But he also hoped that other fans who failed to get the souvenir will honor their donations.

However, donors who want to get their money back because they were unable to get the doll will get a refund from the foundation, he said.

The executive said PTS would spend around NT$30 million on royalties and production costs to broadcast the contracted 50 MLB games -- including all post-season games -- this year.

PTS could be forced not to renew the contract for the next season if the new contract or the overall production costs surge sharply, he said.
